When you haven’t been SUPER active all winter, but think you’re still in shape and then you feel like you’re dying after hiking–that was me before this Twin Sisters Engagement Session! 😛 I hate when you THINK you’re in ok shape only to try something and figure out that you definitely are NOT in shape and you are NOT 20 anymore. HA! Anyways….Luckily, these two are in much better shape than me and were willing and awesome and hiked up to Twin Sisters with me for their engagement session! These two live over on the East Coast, but with family over here, and their love of wine tasting, they wanted Terra Blanca as their wedding venue. I’m so excited to shoot their wedding this July there! It’s going to be a beautiful one!
We laughed a ton during their session! They pulled out some wine from their wine tasting earlier that day, toasted to a warm drive home (it was COLD with the wind blowing), and crushed their session!!! When I first chatted with these two, the story of how they met is one of the coolest. I’ll let them take it from here…
They met in St. Thomas, USVI. Zach was living there at the time and Catherine was on what she thought would be a vacation. While “love at first sight” might sound a bit cliché, they locked eyes from across the bar. The next few scenes have been debated by Catherine and Zach since the beginning but let’s just say… it took Zach a little while to work up some courage to ask Catherine on a date. The rest is history. Catherine moved to St. Thomas, USVI and was able to freelance for various startups and they enjoyed the nomad life for a couple years. They’ve been in Charlotte, NC for the last couple years acclimating to the real world.
And their proposal story…
Zach always said he’d NEVER propose on a holiday, birthday, or special event. On my 29th birthday he told me he was taking me to Asheville, NC — a small mountain town just outside of Charlotte. A couple days before we left, I was telling Zach I spent too much getting my hair done so I was going to skip getting my nails done this year (a birthday self-care traditional treat of mine). He said, “no way, I think you should get them done”. The next day he came home with a gift card to my favorite nail salon. Of course I went all out with sparkly birthday nails and we hit the road for Asheville. I told my sister about the nice gesture from Zach and she immediately said, “OMG, he’s going to propose!!!!”. I reassured her that it wouldn’t happen on my birthday. A random, but important piece of information: Zach and I are both scared of heights. So… once we checked into our hotel, Zach made sure I had a very large glass of red wine before giving me a heads up that we’d be going on a birthday hot air balloon at 6am in the morning. Grateful for the warning yet a little nervous I thought it was a pretty cool birthday present. We were getting ready to leave in the morning and he had a big backpack on… in my half-asleep state, I asked him, “what’s the big bag for?”. He said, “extra gloves, and layers, I know how cold you get”. I didn’t even question it. Once we were at the hot air balloon take-off area, a photographer announced that she’d be taking photos of everyone and they’d be available online. She snapped a couple of us with another group of people and we wandered around for a while, watching the balloons get inflated. Eventually, Zach grabbed my hand and got down on one knee. You never know what your response is going to be until the moment happens I guess but I cried hysterically. It was the best day and the best moment. Turns out he hired a photographer to capture the entire moment and snap a few photos of us in the hot air balloon as well!
SO FUN RIGHT!?!?! I’m honored to get to work with them this July!! It’s going to be SO much fun!
Zach and Catherine–thanks for freezing with me, and taking the time from your vacation with family to do your shoot!!! Travel safe!!!
