Almost every time I set up an engagement session, I get asked “but what do I wear?” It’s a great question to ask, and there’s a few tips that I always tell my clients when it comes to what to wear for engagement photos.

Things to Think About

Be yourself! You don’t want to be uncomfortable while you’re taking photos. Wear something that you’re not only comfortable it, but that represents you and your style. When you’re comfortable in your clothes, you’re more comfortable in general! This includes shoes too, ladies!

What to wear to your engagement session

You know what suits your body style! If you are self-conscious about something on your body, don’t have it exposed. Trust me when I say that if you are constantly tugging and pulling and worrying about your clothes, we’ll see that in the end result.

What to wear to your engagement session

Dress for the weather! If it’s mid-winter, you don’t want to be freezing the whole time in lighter clothes. And if it’s 105 degrees, you aren’t going to want to be in something that makes you sweat. Keep the season in mind and dress accordingly. You’ll be more COMFORTABLE (are you seeing a theme here? 8)

Coordinate your outfits! No, I don’t mean be matchy-matchy, but think complimentary colors! Fire engine red and bright blue, blush pink and torquoise. Remember that color wheel you learned about back in elementary school? Check out the colors on the opposite sides of each have other! Also, both of you should be as dressy as the other. If one of you is semi formal, the other should be semi formal. Keep it simple!

Keep your location in mind! Are you going to be outdoors? A tux may not be as fitting as if you were going to be downtown in the city. Keep this in mind as well!

Think Layers! Whether it’s a cardigan or even jewelry, the little details matter and make you look more put together! I always recommend bringing two outfits, and having one more dressy than the other! This will give you more diversity in your photos, but it also gives you the extra option!

Ladies!!! I want to get gorgeous pictures of your engagement ring! Make sure it’s nice and sparkly and your nails look nice. No chipped polish or dirt under your fingernails (I’d be guilty if that!).

What Not to Do

Wear khaki or white. Light colors tends to wash out fair complexions.

Go tanning or get your hair done different the day of or week of. There’s somethings you can’t change quickly, and a sunburn is one of those, a dye job gone wrong is another.

Wear exactly matching outfits. We’ve all seen the 90s. That’s all.

Wear brand new clothes straight out of the store. Wrinkles. Enough said.

What to Do

Professional hair and makeup. It’s always fun to get all dolled up! And it photographs better too!

Wear bold colors! It’s fun! And looks great on camera!

Wash and iron your clothes! Photoshop can’t fix it, but you can!

Bring props! Anything that’s important to you! Pets, a sport, hobby, anything goes!

If all else fails, you can always try this awesome sight that will pick some new clothes for you!!

FOR THE GUYS— there’s Trunk Club.

FOR THE GIRLS– there’s Stitch Fix.

You put in your sizes, they ask some questions about what you like and what you don’t, and then the professional stylists pick out trendy things for you! The best part, you only keep what you like, then send the rest back!

So whether you’re a fashion-savy person, or you just want to have your own stylist, I hope these tips help you pick out some amazing outfits for your engagement photos.
