One of my favorite details to shoot on wedding days is the wedding rings, and I couldn’t do it without my ring shot kit! I always bring my ring shot kit with me to ensure that I get the best images I can of the rings. There’s a few tricks I use when it comes to ring shots, and getting some that your brides will love.
Some of the things I have in my ring kit are:
1. Glitter Foam sheets! — I have used paper in the past, but I found that in order to put it in my kit, I either had to cut it to fit, and bend it, and then I ended up with creases in the paper, that I never wanted when it came to taking photos later. It drove me crazy, but I found these awesome foam sheets at Hobby Lobby, and never turned back! I have a few different colors, and even some patterned ones.
2. A Lucy and Larry LED flash light. It never hurts to have some pretty shiny lights on those diamonds. If you have ever gone into a jewelry store, that is something they do to make their jewelry look even prettier. And I love the names :)…and you can’t forget the extra triple A’s just in case.
3. Something that changed my ring shot game forever was using orthodontic wax, the kind you can find in any grocery or drug store in the toothbrush aisle, can be used to prop rings up. That’s right!! No more taking 30 minutes trying to keep the rings upright for JUST the right shot. This does the trick every time. BUT keep it away from the dress. It can leave oil spots!
4. I have little acrylic crystals in my kit. With the LED flashlights, it can make for some great bokeh behind the rings.
5. I also have a string of pearls. Also looks very cool behind the rings.
6. Some lace and burlap. It seems to be a constant trend of burlap and lace for weddings here, and I have it just in case, but rarely use it. (after this season, I will probably take it out.
7. Lastly, it doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with ring shots, but I always bring a heavy duty 3M hook. It helps when there NO place to hang the dress for your dress details shots. It seriously amazes me every time I use it. Just don’t forget to grab it when you leave (I did this last wedding I shot, and didn’t remember until I was home laying in bed. SHOOT!)
Even though I bring my ring shot kit with me every wedding, I don’t always use it! There are times when I do, just to get more diversity in my details shots, but I try to involve details from the wedding in my ring shots.
I love using the flowers to place the rings on. You get both aspects of the day, and it helps keep your color story fluid!
If you don’t have an of the glitter paper, or foam sheets, you can always put the bride’s jewelry behind the rings when you shoot and it should add some gorgeous bokeh behind them as well!
Another great option is just using the ring box!!
If all else fails, use elements from the wedding venue! Whether it’s some pretty wood, or even a rock, you may be surprised what it can look like on a macro level!
Ring shots are definitely some of my favorites, and I hope this helps you guys with ideas for your own ring shot kit! Do you have one for wedding days?! Do you have other great items in yours!? I want to know!
Great post!! I do use a kit- I have some fun paper straws that I use sometimes to create some depth somewhere to hold rings, and lots of textured scrapbook paper to create backgrounds and foregrounds if needed!!!
