Eastern Washington is a crazy place. Whenever I tell someone that I live in Washington, I know immediately they think of Seattle. What they don’t realize is just how different Eastern Washington, specifically the Columbia Basin, is to western Washington. It’s desert like climate, so dry, hot during the summer, but we still get cold in the winter, just with less snow than the higher parts of the state. Just last week we got our first snow fall and I had been DYING to shoot in it! And I’ve been wanting to really try out my new lens- the new Nikon 105mm f1.4! I was bummed when a few weeks ago I headed to Leavenworth and they didn’t even have snow! Come to find out it snowed all night AFTER my engagement shoot and it was like a winter wonderland. BUMMER.
I was so excited when my friend, Deidra of 180 Consulting, asked me if I wanted to go do some snowy portraits! I’m always up for freezing a little if it’s for a good reason–hence why we dubbed this shoot “Freezin’ for a Reason.” No real other reason than to get out in the snow, and shoot some portraits of her in her EPIC fur coats. I don’t think PETA would have approved.
If Deidra looks familiar, she should. I have used her for modeling in a few shoots, with the help of her hubby, because 1. they are adorable, and 2. they’re always up for whatever!! I’m even trying to talk them into another one this winter that may involved an ice rink…..keep your eyes peeled for that. 😉 She is a personal stylist, and when I walked into her closet on Monday, I could see why. I did laugh a little (read: a lot) because her closet looks a lot like my husbands and mine. He has a small area for his clothes, and then mine take up about 80% of it. It was pretty clear theirs was the same. Her closet was like a dream, and she really has an eye for what she does. (Enter plug here) If you’re in need for a stylist because you need help finding outfits for your engagement session, or for your family photos, or heck, even your work Christmas party, hit her up! You can email her at 180consult@gmail.com. She even does closet clean-outs. Who doesn’t need a good closet clean out!?
I was even more excited when I showed up and Deidra said she had a few fur coats that she wanted to shoot, including a vintage LONG white one. SCORE! I loved trucking out in the snow with this girl, and she always kills it in front of the camera! I think we figured out how the best way to shoot in the snow though. We shot our first set, then headed back to Deidra’s house for us to warm up, and her to change, and then we headed back out for the second time around. It was still a bit chilly, but she knocked it out of the park with these.
I won’t make you wait any longer. (Let it goooo…Let it goooooo…..I was totally singing during our session.)
