Everyone knows the old saying “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” It’s an age-old tradition that gives the bride a little idea of a few things she should have for good luck on her wedding day. It’s a task to find your perfect dress, jewelry, and shoes, and adding in these four extra things can sometimes make a bride overwhelmed! It can be tricky when you want it to tie into your wedding, but you also want it to be meaningful to you. With this series of blog posts, I wanted to give brides some ideas for what their four items could be. “Something old” is meant to stand for continuity. Many times they chose something that was their mother’s, or grandmother’s, but here are 5 creative something old items for brides.
1. Photos of loved one who are no longer with us. These can be displayed in a number of ways. From printing them and placing them in a locket to wear, or add to your bouquet, or one of my favorites, have a “family tree,” this is a great way to incorporate something old into your wedding, and still make it meaningful to you and your groom.
2. An old handkerchief that belonged to someone close to you, like a grandparent or parent. You can beautifully wrap it around your bouquet, or I even had a bride wear it under her garter. You could also cut it into any shape and have in sewn into the inner living of your wedding dress.
3. You could always wear your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress. Most of the time, they’re not completely in style, but a great way to incorporate is use part of the dress to make your own, or even a headpiece, or sash.
4. An old veil is a perfect item for your “something old”. Veils tend to be very classic and won’t appear too dated. This is also a great way to save a little bit of money!
5. Take a family heirloom and have it made into a necklace, earrings, or a hair piece. Old brooches make some gorgeous hair pieces!
Hopefully these gave you a few great ideas for your own “something old.”
If you are already married, what was your “something old” item?
If you are in the process, what do you plan on it being?
