For a while this has been on my mind, and I just figured I may as well just come out with it. It’s not anything serious, but something that seriously needs to be addressed. I’m a part of quite a few photographer groups on social media, some like Rising Tide Society, and Shoot and Share, and a few others similar to that that are localized, and there’s some days I can’t believe how lucky I am do be able to do what I do. Being able to meet new people, and being able to be a part of their story, it’s really pretty awesome. For a short time in their life, I get to document something that they will have FOREVER. Something that their ancestors will look back on and say “wow! What was great-grandma thinking when she wore that!?” HA! This is one of the reasons that I believe you should be treating your clients like gold.

Sure, we feel like we do a lot for them! We answer emails, take phone calls, prep for the session (i.e scouting locations, getting permission if needs be, etc.) shoot the session, EDIT the session, and the list goes on, but without them, we wouldn’t have ANYTHING to do! We’re there to help serve them. It’s not about us anymore at that point, it’s about having our clients feel like we love them, we cherish those moments, and that we truly care about them. It’s not about the money when you start to look at them as people and not just as another date booked.

One of the most important things that I do in my business is gifting to my clients. Recently I was at one of our local Rising Tide meetings, and I couldn’t believe just how many people don’t gift their clients. Let me be the first one to say that I definitely didn’t think of all of my gifts on my own, but once I started doing it, it just became second nature. I have always loved to give people presents. Whether it’s to my 2 year old when we’re at the store and she wants a stuffed doggy (You better believe she gets a stuffed doggy), Or for my hubby when he says he REALLY wants something, and I tell him we don’t have money for it, and then buy it anyways to surprise him. Gifting people makes me feel SO good. And it doesn’t have to be anything big. Think about it. How do you feel when someone brings you coffee (or something that’s not coffee in my instance) just because. You didn’t ask for it. You didn’t expect it, but it makes your day a little bit brighter because of $3 and a little extra time of theirs. So why wouldn’t we do that for our clients?

I sent off some client gifts not too long ago to some of my brides whose weddings are coming up QUICK! I just wanted them to have this said gift for the wedding, and I have had brides ask for them in the past. I don’t know if they’ll use it. I didn’t know if they would hate the images I put in them, but I put away my pride and did it anyways. I woke up a few days later to a text I had gotten WAY past my bed-time, but it made me feel SO good inside.

“…my mom sent me a video of your gift and I’m seriously in tears….you are absolutely a gift from Jesus.”

A gift from Jesus- I’ll take that! But it wasn’t about the amazing review she left me, and her mom left me shortly after that made all of that worth it. It made HER feel good. It let her see that I care, that I love them, and that I want the best for them on their wedding day. But dang it, it made me feel awesome too.

I do believe that there are times that we need to stand firm with our business practices. That we can’t break the “rules” that we’ve given ourselves, but every once in a while, let’s remember that it isn’t just about us. It’s about them, and I think we’ll all be a little bit better. 🙂

  1. Soooo much yes! We LOVE gifting our clients – it makes us feel as good as they do! Gift giving is one of our love languages, after all! 😉

  2. Yes! So much yes. I started giving gifts to my clients last year, and I LOVE it. So do they!
