Planning your wedding is stressful, and you may add to that stress by feeling like you should also be writing your own wedding vows. You have heard stories of other couples having these AMAZING vows to each other, but you just aren’t sure you could be so eloquent. No worries !! Here are some pros and cons of writing your own wedding vows!

Pros to Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

It’s all about YOU!

–You and your significant other are pros when it comes to your relationship. You know yourselves, and no can write about your experiences better than you! More traditional vows may not do it for you. Maybe you want to vow to always kill the spiders, or always change the toilet paper roll. Whatever you want to add to it, you can!

You can be as creative as you want.

–I know of a bride who actually sang a song to her groom as her vows. It was beautiful, and it was them. You can sing, dance, throw in some comedy in the mix (that’s my favorite!). Whatever you think will be most meaningful to you.

It means more.

–When YOU are the one writing your vows, it’s more honest and raw. It’s easy to just repeat after your officiant. It can mean SO much more when your wedding vows come from the heart.

Cons to Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

It can be scary.

–Public speaking may not be one of your favorite past times. If you are a severe introvert, being in front of hundreds of people, all eyes on you, maybe making you sure anxious already. Add in the fact that you actually have to TALK in front of them, that may just send you over the top. You don’t need to make yourself uncomfortable, by any means!

Maybe your not the best poet…

–I’m sure we all wish we could write as beautifully as Shakespeare, but unfortunately that’s not the case. You may have this great idea to write these beautiful wedding vows only to get writer’s block within the first few words. I get that.

You have to put yourself out there.

–If you’re concerned about opening up in front of all your guests, writing your own vows may not be the best idea for you. There’s a good chance you’ll cry, laugh, forget what you’re going to say, and it may go completely the wrong direction you were hoping. That could just add to your stress level. So if you really don’t feel comfortable about it, just don’t do it.

Regardless, whether you decide to write your own vows, or just use more traditional vows, it’s YOUR wedding. You can do whatever you feel comfortable with, and whatever makes you happy! 🙂 After all, it is just about you!

I loved writing our own vows! Kevin was not so sure haha! I ended up writing the same vows that we then recited to each other, so that made it easier for him and still personal. Also loved seeing this pics pop up in my feed! ????????
